President Biden spoke to the nation last week about the pandemic and the Covid Relief Bill that was signed into law.
It was a good speech, well-delivered in 78-year-old Joe Biden’s avuncular way.
Unlike former President Donald Trump (of whom this reporter was a supporter), President Biden did not speak about himself.
He spoke to the TV viewing audience—to you and to me.
He was believable—and that’s part of the problem…
President Biden was going along famously, assuring us that we’d get through the pandemic together.
He would urge all State governors to make the vaccine available to everyone.
So far, so good.
But then he offered what he and his administration thought was a bonus—we might be “allowed” to have small gatherings on the 4th of July!
Oh yes, we’d be “allowed,” provided we behaved ourselves.
Hallelujah!
Yes, Uncle Joe in the best tradition of a benevolent dictator would “allow” us to celebrate Independence Day.
Wow!
And, like a benign yet stern elderly uncle, President Biden told us to make sure we continue to wear our masks and to social distance.
Amen.
I must admit, until Biden mentioned “allowing us” to have semi-normal 4th of July, he had me.
Up to that point, he had been believable and effective as the Nation’s Uncle-in-Chief.
Yet beyond that avuncular persona lies the full and devastating force of the Federal Government, along with Democratic governors, ready to do its bidding and sink us into financial ruin.
Let’s face it, Dear Reader, we no longer live in a free country.
We haven’t been free in a long time.
Covid lockdowns and restrictions have made us much less free.
We’re semi-free.
The free part is what creates progress and prosperity.
The unfree part—overzealous Federal, State, and local government—stunts our freedom and progress—including just about any plans you make for the future.
But let’s look on the positive side…
Uncle Joe will allow us to pretend we are free on the 4th of July.
Hallelujah!
